Neopsephotus bourkii (Bourke's Parrot) IUCN Status: Least Concern This is another photo from AWC’s
Bowra sanctuary. Up front I must share they have an understandable policy of not going near nests. So many folk visit Bowra that their strict policies to protect the life there are needed. This photo is a heavy crop of an original taken with an 840mm focal length at a distance of at least 50m. I was in full camo, standing behind bushes.
One of the hardest things about getting great photos is finding subjects. Certainly going to an amazing location like Bowra helps, but even then nothing helps more than local knowledge. The folks there were wonderfully generous with information on where wildlife could be found on the vast property. One of the volunteers showed me this crack in the folk of a tree they has spotted Bourke’s Parrots nesting in. I wouldn’t have spotted it.
My long lens and patience let me discover that the adults were raring three chicks, which I reported with delight back to the nightly “bird call” report on what we’d seen through the day.
