Lophochroa leadbeateri

Lophochroa leadbeateri (Major Mitchell's Cockatoo)

IUCN Status: Least Concern

Major Mitchell’s Cockatoo is also known by other names: Leadbeater’s Cockatoo, and Pink Cockatoo. I always knew them as Major Mitchell’s. The Major Mitchell’s moniker is in reference to Major Thomas Mitchell, a Scottish surveyor / explorer, who among a sea of bad choices (including killing Aboriginals, and instigating the last duel to take place in Australia), wrote glowingly about this species. I’ve noticed a shift away from using the “Major Mitchell’s” name. I think that’s justified.
Typically person names are used in reference to the individual that describes the type specimen. In this case that was Benjamin Leadbeater, a British naturalist who collected the type specimen of this species, and who has several species named as name sake.
